The manufacturing process of a Shakti skincare product: from idea to f

Have you ever thought about the journey a skincare product takes before it reaches your shelves? At Shakti, launching a new product is far from instantaneous. We asked Sonia, co-founder and dermo-esthetician, to explain the steps. It all starts with an idea How does the development of a new product begin? We always start with a list of ideas that we pitch to each other. We ask ourselves two questions: what does the partner esthetician need, and what do we need ourselves, because we are also estheticians in the field. Choosing the laboratory and formulating Next, how do you determine the formula? We work with more than one laboratory, each with its own expertise, so we choose the one that best suits the intended product. Then, we look for a formulation synergy: we want it to work on one or more skin types, taking into account the rarity of the ingredients. If we can source them on Quebec soil, that's even better. It's part of our values. Laboratory testing What tests must a product pass before it sees the light of day? We sit down with the chemists to test the texture, scent, and effectiveness. We test it on ourselves, and on other clients. Once satisfied with the formulation, we move on to preservation tests, also known as challenge tests, to see how long the product remains active once opened by the client. Next come stability tests, to ensure that the product withstands heat, cold, and all our Quebec conditions. A sunscreen left in a beach bag in the summer undergoes a lot of stress; it must have been tested to guarantee its stability and performance. Price, packaging, and labels Once the product is approved, what's left to do? This is where the marketing side begins: who the product is for, and especially the price. We take into account the cost price, but also market competition, so that both the esthetician and the client pay a fair price. Next, we need to find the packaging and labels. Since the pandemic, sourcing packaging has become more difficult because the majority of it does not come from Quebec. We need to find the right container to ensure the product's preservation, and sometimes we have to make adjustments along the way if something doesn't work. How long does it actually take? From start to finish, how long can it take to launch a product? It depends on the type of product. A waterless formula requires fewer tests because the risk of contamination is lower. But for a cream with a more complex texture, we're talking about a good year, sometimes more, before having a finished product from A to Z. In summary Step What happens Ideation List of ideas, needs of estheticians and the team Formulation Laboratory choice, ingredient synergy Testing Texture, scent, effectiveness, preservation, stability Marketing Price, packaging, labels Total time Often one year, sometimes a year and a half Why it matters to you When a client asks you why a Shakti product costs that much, you now know everything that goes into it: the rigorous selection of ingredients, the stability and effectiveness tests, the attention paid to packaging. It is this laboratory rigor, combined with a real sensitivity in the field, that distinguishes Shakti's dermo-botanical approach.
